Jo Roessler 93 PH
Based in Easthampton, MA
I specialize in custom and limited edition residential and commercial furniture. I design and handcraft each of my pieces and while my style has been variously described as 'modern,' 'architectural' and 'Japanese-influenced,' I eschew such neat categorizations of my work.
My work is is artist designed contemporary wood furniture. Each piece is individually designed and handcrafted using a blend of traditional techniques and modern technology.
What are some things that inspire you in your studio practice?
I don’t have a rulebook or dogma about adhering to one particular style, I take my cues from everyday objects, nature, the world around me, something as basic as a leaf – simplicity and elegance on the surface, but with an amazing underlying complexity.
Does your current creative practice tie into your time spent at RISD? How so?
Absolutely, the experiences and lessons I had at RISD continue to affect my work. This influence is woven throughout my design process and my approach to materials.
Any recent press/exhibitions/achievements you'd like to share with us?
My work is exhibited at prestigious and jury-entried design and craft shows throughout the eastern United States, has been featured on Home and Garden Television, and written up in numerous books and periodicals. Recent exhibitions include the Philadelphia Museum of Art Show, the Smithsonian Show and ACC Baltimore.
