Gary Heise 83 PT
Based in New Jersey
My watercolor paintings are painted in ink and watercolor on Chinese xuan (rice paper), but the subject matter of the work is based entirely on a personal experience of the landscape, including scenes of Bristol Bay in Rhode Island, Yosemite National Park in California, and the hills and streams of the Highlands of New Jersey near my home. The work ranges from semi-abstract landscapes, to realistic depictions of specific scenes and places.
What are some things that inspire you in your studio practice?
I prefer landscape painting with Chinese ink and rice paper, and the challenge of using these traditional materials and techniques to interpret new ideas of the American landscape.
Does your current creative practice tie into your time spent at RISD?
I have a BFA/Painting from RISD and have always painted. Through the years I find I now have a greater confidence and focus for my work.
Is there a work/body of work that you are particularly excited about sharing with us at RISD Craft this year?
Yes! I am always excited about my most recent work.
Any recent press/exhibitions/achievements you'd like to share with us?
I am represented by Juxtapose Gallery in Westfield, NJ.
