Catherine Smith 04 IL
Based in Providence, RI
What are some things that inspire you in your studio practice?:
I draw inspiration from the natural world around me. I especially enjoy the out-of-the-ordinary wildlife creatures.
Does your current creative practice tie into your time spent at RISD? How so?:
I draw on my RISD education constantly, especially what I learned of Renaissance portraits in order to evoke a sense of importance and personality in each animal portrait.
Is there a work/body of work that you are particularly excited about sharing with us at RISD Craft this year?:
I just completed a fun and quirky portrait of llama and am currently finishing a straight-on portrait of a screeching bald eagle.
Any recent press/exhibitions/achievements you'd like to share with us?:
My work was recently exhibited as part of the WE ARE ANIMALS pop-up exhibit at Trade gallery in Providence, RI (May 2017). I also recently had pieces in the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's Party for the Peregrine silent auction.
